The Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute is seeking a Vice President of Operations. Geisinger’s Musculoskeletal Institute is a part of one of the nation’s most advanced integrated care delivery systems takes a caring approach to managing disease, disorders and injuries of the bones, joints and muscle. The Musculoskeletal Institute is comprised of 81 physicians and over 650 employees providing comprehensive care for patients with physical medicine & rehabilitation, orthopedic foot and ankle, hand and wrist, elbow and shoulder, hip and knee, sports medicine, trauma and cancer conditions. In addition, the Musculoskeletal Institute hosts a robust research and top-performing academic program including 23 ACGME accredited Orthopaedic residency and fellowship positions.

In partnership with the Physician/Surgeon Chair, the Vice President of Operations for the Geisinger Musculoskeletal Institute provides overall administrative leadership across 49 practice locations including more than 45 high school, college and professional sports teams. The Vice President is responsible for developing and leading institute initiatives, as well as strategic thinking and business development support. The Vice President will work to advance coordination between network affiliates, health system entities and other strategic partners; in addition to execution of business growth & other strategic initiatives. A member of the Institute’s senior team s/he helps strategize and inform major initiatives for the health system. The primary office location for this role is in Danville, PA.
A key competency for the incumbent will include leading innovative teams across service lines, strategic partnerships, and business plans that are specific to the Institute while also fulfilling broader strategies for the health system. The Vice President will also be expected to independently represent the Institute throughout the organization and with outside partners. S/he is responsible, overall, for the strategic success across the organization, requiring him/her to execute work at the highest level of the organization while navigating a highly matrixed and ever-growing group of stakeholders.
In conjunction with the COO and Institute Chair, develop strategies that promote access to care within the system in existing markets and new markets. Establish long-range clinical quality, growth, and financial objectives and ensure they are achieved.
Promote a team-based approach for providers, scientists, researchers, educators and other healthcare professionals. Develop and maintain effective liaison with management, physicians, patients, and employees.
Build flexible and robust infrastructure to respond quickly to health reform, market forces, and the rapidly improving world of patient-centered care. Report on the Institute’s business initiatives regularly, as it pertains to volumes, program and financial trends, and any notable changes.
Collaborate with Institute Chair to develop and maintain appropriate quality, financial and operational metrics and dashboards; support performance improvement utilizing Lean methodologies across teams using metric identification and reporting, where appropriate; incorporate bundled payment programs as appropriate.
Collaborate with others to optimize organizational development and operations of the Institute as it continues to grow. Work closely with marketing and liaison teams to implement strategies integrating market development, operations and quality strategies to effectively support growth and integration.
Support business decisions with financial and market analytics to establish the value created in terms of quality, cost savings, etc.
Performs duties in accordance with Geisinger’s purpose and values.
Education and Experience:
Master’s degree required. MBA, MHA preferred
Minimum 10 years prior management experience, or demonstrated leadership progression leading a department required, preferably in a comprehensive medical center or integrated health system
Experience with MSK clinical departments, both ambulatory and inpatient, preferred
Experience in strategy and business development highly preferred
Demonstrated process improvement competency of Lean/Six Sigma methodologies or Baldrige framework highly preferred
Experience with physician productivity and labor benchmarking preferred

GEISINGER MEDICAL CENTER: (GMC), located Danville, Pa., the largest tertiary/quaternary care teaching hospital in the region, is licensed for 475 beds, including 89 pediatric beds in the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital. GMC, a Magnet Hospital, maintains the region’s only Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma Center with additional qualifications in pediatrics.
